From the note: PAKISTAN: MILLIONS IN URGENT NEED
By UMCOR - United Methodist Committee On Relief
Flood victims crowd the back of a trailer while evacuating to higher grounds in Pakistan's Muzaffargarh district in Punjab province August 11, 2010. The floods have ploughed a swathe of destruction more than 600 miles long from northern Pakistan to the south, killing more than 1,600 people. Bashir Ahmed, 30, a day laborer from Sultan Kot Village, Pakistan, was poor before the floods started tearing through his country four weeks ago, but now his family has nothing. He is grateful he was able to bring his elderly parents, two younger brothers, wife and four children to safety.

Bashir and his family received emergency food assistance through Church World Service and the National Capacity Building Program, in partnership with the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). The relief package met some of their immediate needs, but their crisis continues.

At least 8 million Pakistanis are in dire need of emergency assistance—food, clean water, and shelter; more than 20 million have been affected. The United Nations says the disaster’s toll is comparable to the combined toll of the 2010 Haiti earthquake, 2004 Indonesia tsunami, and 2005 Kashmir earthquake. UMW Sunday - August 22nd

Sunday, August 22nd is United Methodist Women Sunday. We are celebrating 140 years of women in mission. The UMW women will be actively involved in all 4 morning church services as ushers, readers, and other roles. Volunteers are still needed to support these services. Contact Jean McHarge at 303-741-9331 or jeanmcharge@comcast.net if you can help!

On Sunday, Aug. 22, do not miss the UMW Luncheon and General Meeting after the 10:40 service. Just bring yourself and perhaps a friend and celebrate 140 years of women in mission and learn more about membership and mission outreach opportunities with UMW. The UMW Board will be serving a taco bar lunch. All ladies (and men too) from the church community are invited.

For more information, contact Jean McHarge at 303-741-9331 or jeanmcharge@comcast.net
