Recipe - Cherry Cobbler Crunch

Ingredients:
1 pkg. of Yellow Cake Mix
1 can of Cherry Pie Filling, approx 21 oz. (Look for cans labeled “Extra Cherries”**)
1 tsp. lemon juice
1 stick melted butter or margarine

Directions:
1. Mix 1 tsp. lemon juice with pie filling and pour pie filling in a greased or sprayed 8 x 8 pan.

2.In separate bowl, blend cake mix and melted butter together. It will be crumbly.

3. Sprinkle the cake mix and butter mixture over top of cherries.

Bake at 350 for 40 - 50 minutes or until top is golden brown.

Bring to church fresh with a cover on the pan

Cherry Cobbler Sale - Sun., Feb. 12

The annual UMW Cherry Cobbler Dessert Sale will be held Sunday, Feb 12th from 8:30 to 11:45. Cherry Cobblers will be sold for $10 each. Gluten free desserts will also be available.

The money raised will be used toward the St. Andrew UMW's various mission projects which have included United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN), Denver Urban Ministries (DenUM), The Women’s Crisis and Family Outreach Center, InterFaith Community Services (IFCS), Warren Village, and House of Hope.

Volunteers are needed to work shifts at the sales table that Sunday morning. Contact Jean McHarge 303-741-9331 or your circle leader to sign up.

Volunteers are needed to bake Cherry Cobbler Desserts at home and deliver them fresh to the church either Saturday the 11th or early Sunday morning.

If you would rather bake at the church, join the baking party on Saturday the 11th at the church.

DenUm Downtown Walking Tour - Sat, Oct 29

The Women of Purpose Circle is scheduled for the DenUm walking tour on Saturday, October 29, 2011 from 10:00am to noon. After the tour we will be enjoying lunch at SAME Café. DenUm has made the arrangements with the Café so they know to expect us for lunch.

The DenUm Downtown Walking Tour takes place in an area of Denver that has a high concentration of nonprofits working with homeless and low income families in Denver. It is also an area of redevelopment, with million dollar lofts overlooking those sleeping on the streets. The clash between these two drastically different socio-economic cultures has caused some conflict in the Denver community. The group will discuss these issues along with the services that agencies in this area provide during the tour. $7 per person.

Health Kits for Liberia

UMW and Outreach are collecting items for health kits for Sue Chilton to take to Liberia.
The following are needed for each kit:
· 1 hand towel (15” x 25” up to 17” x 27”. No kitchen towels.
· 1 washcloth
· 1 comb (large and sturdy, not pocket-sized)
· 1 nail file or fingernail clippers (no emery boards or toenail clippers)
· 1 bath-size bar of soap (3 oz. and up)
· 1 toothbrush (single brushes only in original wrapper, not child-size)
· 6 adhesive plastic strip sterile bandages
Please leave any of these items at the UMW Table in Fellowship Hall.

Ubuntu Work Day - Saturday, July 9th

Join us for the UMW Mile High sub-district Ubuntu Work Day in the south metro area. Ubuntu is an African word that means, “I am human because you are human” or “I am because we are.” It speaks to the affirmation that each person is part of the community. On this day, we will be in mission with local agencies that help others in our community.

We will meet at St. Andrew for registration and worship, and then go into the community to work. Sites include She She’s Corner, InterFaith Community Services, House of Hope, Café 180, The Haven, and South Suburban Parks & Rec. There is something for everyone to do. All females 16 and up are urged to join us. High School students can receive community service credit. You do not need to be a member of UMW to
participate. Pre-registration is required.

Let's put an encouraging note and a card that says your Conference and your UMW district inside the zip lock bag.

Summer Mission Study at St. Andrew

Come and learn about the history of women in mission and what it means to be in mission today. This two night Mission Study – “Joy to the World: Mission in the Age of Global Christianity being held at St. Andrew Tuesday, June 21 & 28, 6:30 – 8:30.

“The church exists by mission just as fire exists by burning.” Sponsored by United Methodist Women. Sign up for this class at the UMW table in Fellowship Hall. Books will be available for purchase for $10.

Methodist mission has evolved over the last 150 years and is quite different from what it was in the 1950's and 1960's. This is an excellent mission study that was presented at the School of Christian Mission last year and is being presented again this year. We are excited to offer it at St. Andrew.

The study topics this year are Joy to the World: Mission in the Age of Global Christianity, The Journey: Forgiveness, Restorative Justice and Reconciliation, and Haiti: Challenges and Hope. Our annual UnBake Sale is our biggest fundraiser of the year. Each woman was given a flier as she left the worship service on Sunday, May 7th. Attached was be a tea bag and an envelope. We encourage you to go home and relax with a nice cup of tea. Then make a donation to UMW for any amount you would have spent in the kitchen baking for a real bake sale.

You do not need an "envelope" to donate. Feel free to write a check to UMW with a note of "UnBake Sale".

Mother's Day Tea

Our UMW Afternoon Tea Ticket was a great success on Sat., May 7th. More than 30 ladies and young ladies attended. The food was delicious! The servers were very gracious and attentive. The harp music and violin music were outstanding.

One attended commented: "I thoroughly enjoyed this tea! It was much better than the tea at the Brown Palace!"

Puttin' on the Green

The annual mini-golf tournament Puttin’ in the Green is a major fundraiser for Inter-Faith Community Services and will be held again at Colorado Journey at Belleview Ave. & Windermere St., Littleton. A team of golfers from the Women of Purpose Circle has participated in this tournament for the last 4 years. Each team is made up of 5 players and is asked to raise $200 each for a total of $1000.

Please help sponsor our team. Donations are being collected in the Fellowship Hall.

Eat at Café 180 in Englewood

Café 180 is a new restaurant dedicated to eliminating hunger by feeding all people regardless of their ability to pay, in a dignified and respectful manner. They are modeled after the SAME Café in Denver, and serve lunch Tuesday through Saturday from 11AM to 2PM. They serve delicious, gourmet flatbread pizza, soups, salads, and sandwiches.

When we asked them how we could support them, they said “please come and eat at our restaurant”. The paying customers make it possible for others to eat. Recently two UMW groups have eaten at Café 180, and we plan to go back again soon and often.

She She’s is owned by James Resource Network, a Colorado non-profit corporation whose mission is to provide single-parent families quick access to hope and supportive services in order to achieve family stability and self-sufficiency, the main emphasis on transitional housing. The Circle of Joy has been helping them sort and organize their clothing.

4. Sierra Leone - Les and Hope Law spoke at our Quarterly Meeting on 11/13

World Thank Offering - 2010

The World Thank Offering was dedicated during the Nov. 13th General Meeting. Members and circles are requested turned in their World Thank Offering to Diane Benthemeier before the end of November.

The World Thank Offering has been a tradition of the Methodist Women for over 100 years. Here's the story of the World Thank Offering from the UMW website:

The World Thank Offering is and has been for many decades an opportunity for personal Thanksgiving and learning of mission outreach.

Through the years, mission has been the main focus of the members of United Methodist Women and its predecessor organizations. Being in mission is sharing our lives and gifts with others that all may be whole persons through Jesus Christ. Mission is creating new persons and a new society as we do away with those things that create barriers or cause separation. It is working to eliminate racism, and sexism, and loneliness. Mission is Christ’s challenge to us to bring the possibility for food, shelter and fulfillment to all of humanity.

Through Thank Offering contributions mission projects are supported in all 50 states and in almost 100 countries. These projects vary from support to schools, hospitals and clinics, day care centers and homes for senior citizens to educational training courses to prevent soil erosion, leadership development, sewing and nutritional courses, and medical training. The number of persons reached by this type of caring and sharing is almost incalculable.

The first Thank Offering was observed in Lansing, MI, due to the inspiration of Mrs. H. E. Taylor 125 years ago. In 1881 Mrs. Taylor recorded this account:

"The World Thank Offering was not thought out; it was given. It was purely providential. When I was weaker than you even thought of, by some freak I was elected District President. In my extremity I called upon the Lord, and he helped me and blessed me in my work. Do you remember the lessons of 1881? The subject was free giving and it made such a strong impression on my mind - building the Tabernacle, then the peace offering, then God’s plan of building the kingdom by free will offering.

"Soon after this we had one of our very best District meetings where a wonderful sense of Divine power was felt. At this meeting I was surprised by being made a Life Member. You know the real blessedness of a meeting is when you get home and live it all over again. I did not think that I had any special desire to become a Life Member, but when I was home and thought that by the kindness of others, $20 in my name was sent to bless the world with Gospel light, my heart was all broken up and I cried aloud, ‘What shall I render unto the Lord for all his benefits?’ A voice said, ‘You can make a Thank Offering.’

I had just sold dried apples and had a $5 gold piece. At once I thought of the money and said, ‘Yes, Lord! I can and I will.’

"I left my work - not the poetic kind, but the washtub-and told my husband that the Lord had given me a wonderful thought, and I was going to write Mrs. Lathrop, our district Corresponding Secretary and tell her about ‘Thank Offering.’ Step by step our women were guided to make a Thank Offering."

At first each woman was asked to give two cents a week. Last year the amount given through Thank Offering was around one million dollars. This beautiful story of "Thanksgiving" shows what can happen when one woman responds to the still small voice.

Bakers Needed - Pumpkin Desserts

Pumpkin Desserts are coming to St. Andrew on Sunday, November 21nd during the church services. Each will be sold for $10.

Bakers are needed to bake pumpkin desserts for sale on Sunday, November 21nd.
This is one of our big fund-raisers for the year. We expect to sell as many pumpkin desserts as we can bake.

Join the fun, and plan to bake several pumpkin desserts -- they are very easy to bake.

Please bring your desserts early to the church service on Sunday morning - November 21nd.

Covered Baking pans (approx 8 /12 X 11) and the Libby's canned Pumpkin Pie Mix are available at King Soopers.

Bake 350 minutes

Ingredients:
For crust:
1 pkg.(19 oz.) Yellow Cake Mix (reserve 1 cup cake mix for topping)
1/2 cup (One stick) Butter (melted)
1 egg

For filling:
1 can (30 oz.) Easy Pumpkin Pie Mix, (not pumpkin) Libby brand
2 eggs
2/3 C. milk

For toppings:
(1 cup reserved cake mix from crust)
1/2 C. sugar
1tsp cinnamon
3 Tbs. butter (soft not melted)

Directions:
1. Crust: In medium bowl combine all but one cup of cake mix; 1/4 cup melted butter; and 1 egg. Press into bottom of pan.

2. Filling: In another bowl combine pumpkin pie mix, 2 eggs and milk. Mix until smooth. Pour over crust.

3. Topping: In bowl use reserved (1-cup) cake mix stir in sugar and cinnamon. Cut in butter. (Mix will be crumbly) Sprinkle over pumpkin mixture.

Bake 350-degree oven for 60 - 70 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. (High Altitude may need several minutes longer).

Bring to church baked, not frozen.

Bashir Ahmed, 30, a day laborer from Sultan Kot Village, Pakistan, was poor before the floods started tearing through his country four weeks ago, but now his family has nothing. He is grateful he was able to bring his elderly parents, two younger brothers, wife and four children to safety.

Bashir and his family received emergency food assistance through Church World Service and the National Capacity Building Program, in partnership with the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). The relief package met some of their immediate needs, but their crisis continues.

At least 8 million Pakistanis are in dire need of emergency assistance—food, clean water, and shelter; more than 20 million have been affected. The United Nations says the disaster’s toll is comparable to the combined toll of the 2010 Haiti earthquake, 2004 Indonesia tsunami, and 2005 Kashmir earthquake. UMW General Meeting - June 13th

The UMW will hold their general meeting on June 13th after the 10:40 service in room 149. It will be a potluck salad luncheon. Please bring a salad or dessert to share. All are welcome.

Our special guest speaker will be Ron Hodges, a retired United Methodist minister, who will be speaking about UMCOR and the new UMCOR facility in Salt Lake City. He just recently returned from heading up a work team in April. In addition, Ron has been part of two work teams at the UMCOR Depot in Baldwin, LA.

UMW Mission Trip to UMCOR in September
Our St. Andrew UMW is putting a team together to go work in September at the Salt Lake City UMCOR depot for a week. This team will depart on Sept. 19th, and return on Sept. 25th. Cafe 180 - in Englewood - Opens

The new Cafe 180 located at the corner of Floyd and Broadway is modeled after the So All May Eat Cafe on Colfax. The menu offers two soups, two salads and two pizzas at each meal. Customers are asked to pay what they would normally pay to eat out - which should be $5 to $10. If a customer cannot pay, they will be asked to give back in a different way by volunteering to help around the restaurant with tasks like washing windows.

Cathy Matthews of Englewood is opening this cafe, and Dirk Holmberg will work at part time kitchen manager and cook. The plan is for Dirk to be the restaurant's only paid employee.

The Cafe 180 opened the first of August.

Cathy is asking that anyone interested in supporting the restaurant to please come and eat at the restaurant.

Spa Day - Great Fun!

Twenty-nine women were thoroughly pampered and rejuvenated at this years Spa Day. Thanks to Linda Lloyd and the committee for all their hard work!

Cindy Bates started the day with the song "Come Away With Me" and then talked to us about awakening our spirit - even if we aren't a morning person. She talked about Kathleen Norris's book "Acedia and Me", and suggested 4 things that we can do to awaken our spirit:

Take sabbath - find time to exhale
Increase your hospitability - receiving strangers and guests
Make time for prayer - perhaps when you walk. Hold people in the light - intercessory prayer.
Practice accountability for your spirit - Find a soul friend or covenant group. Examine your life and spirit daily. How's your spirit? How was your day?

Then we were pampered and relaxed in "rotation sessions" in Yoga, Reflexology, Weight Loss, Clearing the Clutter, and Indulgent cooking. Walk-up booths included:

Restful and relaxing candles
Personal Health Coaching

Jo Heacock spoiled us with a delicious home-made lunch of chicken salad and several freshly baked pies. Of course we had to sample multiple pies!

Today’s General Meeting Brunch was well-attended. Brad and Libby Birky’s story about their SAME Café was fascinating. We sent them back to work with a pickup truck full of donations. They are open 11-2 Mon-Sat, and have been serving a community of 75 daily. http://www.soallmayeat.org/ We have been invited to come eat there anytime - during their regular hours.

UMW General Meeting – SAME Café – Sat. Feb 6th
Brad and Libby Birky from SAME Café will be the guest speakers at the UMW potluck brunch on Sat. Feb. 6, 9:00 – 11:00 at the church.
SAME Café, which stands for So All May Eat, was founded to provide good quality meals to all regardless of ability to pay. All church members and guests are invited to come and learn more about this wonderful ministry. If you can, bring a “brunch item” to share.

Please bring one of the following items to donate to the SAME Café: paper towels, toilet paper, napkins, or straws (individually wrapped). They have also asked for donations of silverware, plates, and coffee mugs—these should be reusable, not paper goods.

Cherry Cobbler Fund Raiser – Sun. Feb 14th
The UMW will be selling Cherry Cobblers on Sunday, Feb 14th to raise money for its programs at St. Andrew and its mission outreach. UMW’s mission outreach last year included UMCOR, The Women’s Crisis and Family Outreach Center, IFCS, Warren Village, House of Hope, Family Homestead, and a scholarship for a teacher in Belize.
UMW members are encouraged to support this event by baking at home or by joining the baking party at the church on Sat, Feb 13th from 9 to 4. Volunteers are needed to work at the sales desk on Sun. Feb. 14th. Contact Jean McHarge 303-741-9331 to volunteer or for more information.

Cherry Cobbler Recipe

This is the receipe that we 're using for our February fund raiser:

Ingredients:
1 pkg. of Yellow Cake Mix
1 can of Cherry Pie Filling , approx 21 oz
1 tsp. lemon juice
1 stick melted butter or margarine

Directions:
1. Mix 1 tsp. lemon juice with pie filling and pour pie filling in (greased or sprayed) 8 x 8 pan.

2. In separate bowl, blend cake mix and melted butter together. (It will be crumbly).

3. Sprinkle the cake mix and butter mixture over top of cherries.

Bake 350 for 40 - 50 minutes or until top is golden brown.

The new Knitting and Crocheting Circle was launched on Sunday, Nov. 8. All women who knit, crochet, or want to learn are invited to join.

This group meets Fridays 10-noon and 3rd Sun at 12 to 1:00 in Room 241. We’re making premie caps, helmet liners for the troops, and prayer shawls.

Bakers Needed - Pumpkins Desserts!

Bakers are needed to bake pumpkin desserts for sale on Sunday, November 22nd during the church services. This is one of our big fund-raisers for the year. We expect to sell as many pumpkin desserts as we can bake.

Please sign up to bake several pumpkin desserts -- they are very easy to bake.

Just in time for Tanksgiving or a Holiday Party and you don't have to bake! United Methodist Women will sell our FAMOUS Pumpkin Desserts at all services Sunday, November 22!.
For those who have had these before, you know that they sell out quickly because we have amazing bakers in our church family. Last year we raised nearly $1000 for Mission Outreach with thse desserts! These huge desserts are only $9 each! Buy one for yourself and one to donate to Street Reach! You'll be the hit when you serve this to everyone on Thanksgiving!
